IGBTs are three-terminal semiconductor devices (Collector, Emitter, Gate) used in power switching applications. The internal structure of the device is similar to that of a PNP BJT transistor cascaded with an n-channel MOSFET. Due to their rapid turn-on and turn off and power handling capabilities IGBTs are commonly used in switching power supplies, electric cars and variable frequency drives.
